Jim Nell, WG 1 Convenor, opened the meeting at 1030 on 16 January 2001. Attending were:

The agenda (N442) was accepted with minor alterations.

The minutes of the 2000-September-11/13 meeting in Gaithersburg (N441) were approved with minor editing. ACTION: Jim Nell to make these edits and post a revised N 441 on the WG 1 Web site.

Kurt Kosanke reported on the CIMOSA Technical Baseline, which is being extended in order to be a potential contribution to the ISO-CEN parallel project to revise ENV 12204, Constructs for enterprise modelling. CIMOSA has also recognized the need to consolidate and harmonize terminology used in many enterprise-modeling standards and related documents, and will begin an effort on terminology mapping.

David Shorter discussed the timelines for the ENV 40003, Framework for enterprise modelling, revision, noting that the working draft may be approved by TC 310/WG 1 for submission to the TC 310 secretariat for circulation as a DIS ballot. This approval may occur at the next TC 310/WG 1 meeting in late April 2001. A plan for the revision of ENV 12204 will also be developed at this April meeting. It was also mentioned that Denmark has relinquished the TC 310 secretariat to the UK (BSI).

Kurt Kosanke reported that ICEIMT02 will be held in the March/April 2002 timeframe in Valencia, Spain. A request for funding of this Workshop was submitted to the European Commission. Nevertheless, CIMOSA plans to conduct parts of the ICEIMT02 program regardless of the EC's decision. A "preliminary workshop" will be held beforehand to determine the final list of topics to be discussed at ICEIMT02.

Jim Nell briefly reported on a paper covering the UDDI standard, which was developed by an industry consortium that included IBM. The standard, a registry, was likened to a yellow pages for the web. The UDDI Web site is: www.udi.org

Richard Martin reported on an IEEE standards project called SUO that intends to develop an ontology written in KIF. IEEE has formed a study group, whose membership is currently open, to see if such a standard is feasible.

Kurt Kosanke identified the following activities that may be relevant to and might need monitoring by WG 1 experts:

• JTC 1/SC 32 (Open EDI)--developing a framework for the classification of objects
• SC 5/WG 5--developing a framework for the integration of applications
• TC 184/AG--coordinating standardization work in industrial automation and integration
• TC 184/SC 4--establishing a framework for industrial data (a SC 4 task force is currently looking at how each of its WGs works with industrial data).

It was noted that TC 184 has been promoting the framework rules developed by SC 4 for modeling industrial data to other ISO/IEC TCs who are now developing their own data models. There is a concern that the data models of these other TCs will be incompatible with the STEP model.

David Shorter began by mentioning that the development of a working draft for a revised ENV 12204 has been late getting started. Thus, the only issues to discuss at this meeting concern the revision of ENV 40003. David mentioned that he has been busy trying to distill comments received on the as CEN/TC 310/WG 1 N 162 draft issued prior to December 2000.

One comment from Ted Williams concerned the scope of the 40003 draft as being too limited (i.e. limited only to manufacturing). David noted that the scope statement has been widened. The scope now states that the standard is geared to manufacturing but may be applicable to other fields. This statement, along with new definitions, will appear in a new version to be circulated in February 2001. [NOTE: The new version was circulated as CEN/TC 310/WG 1 N 165; Ted Williams has expressed his dissatisfaction with the document, referring back to his comments submitted last November on N 162.]

David Shorter then began a working session to edit N 162 based on a list of issues embodied in TC 310/WG 1 documents N 163 and N 162-PNE. The following major issues with 40003 as it currently standards were noted to be:

1. Qualifying use of "model"
2. Inadequate preparation for genericity/particular/partial
3. Footnote on detailing
4. Rule-based consistency And views
5. Concept of "object" as used here
6. Lack of parallelism in lifecycle definitions
7. Figure 1--modelling level
8. Constructs--redraft needed
9. Modelling levels relate to objects being modelled
10. Replace realisation with model-development process
11. Example of how to use framework is needed in an informative annex
12. Enterprise is a product
13. Architecture--is it an arrangement or a description of an arrangement or a kind of arrangement
14. Decommissioning--definition suggests that this is the wrong term
15. Names of lifecycle phases
16. U/ps are models, not encapsulated reference artefacts
17. Dimensionality of framework--there are multiple dimensions
18. Definition of environment

Upon a re-review of N 163, some issues were closed, but the following new issues were identified:

1. Add text about how partial models also may be created and reused for common-enterprise processes
2. Add new definition of the domain to be considered relative to the environment (change is to be made to annex A)
3. Add model creation and derivation (new annex will be made for this)
4. In annex A:, consistency of the model is helped by limiting its scope and providing links to other models.
5. In a new annex: how to use the framework
6. Use of the terms "model" and "model view"--need to be careful distinguishing the two; certain qualifiers can be used with "model"
7. Model elements and components; for example, an element not used as defined; a parallel cannot be drawn between activity and process

ACTIONS: Kurt Kosanke to provide a rewrite for 5.1.4 and a new definition for "process". David Shorter to include these contributions, make changes on the closed issues, and circulate the new draft to WG 1 by 2001-January-29 with a request for comments by February 12. [Note: A clean draft, N 165, was circulated in late February].

Bernard Dumortier, secretary of IEC/TC 65, joined WG 1 in the discussion on how to organize the work of ISA SP95 in IEC/ISO. It was noted that the S95.01 standard was submitted to IEC Central Office who, with ISO Central Secretariat, will coordinate a simultaneous fast-track DIS ballot in SC 5 and IEC/SC 65A. To this point, Jean-Jacques Michel noted that the French position is that S95.01 should be a technical report.

Since the coordinated ballot requires also a coordinated means to address ballot comments, it was agreed that a JWG should be formed between SC 5 and SC 65A. Greg Winchester drafted a formal request for the formation of this JWG. the TC 65 leadership agreed to the request, which was submitted, then, to IEC and ISO. [Pending formal approval, the JWG will be designated JWG 15 and be convened by Dennis Brandl, who accepted the offer made to him.] It was expected that ISA would, in due time, submit its S95.02 and S95.03 drafts as new work item proposals which would be assigned to JWG 15.

ACTION: Christine Hermetet-Filez to issue a call for participation in JWG 15 among all SCs in TC 184.

Jim Nell conducted a working session to edit the latest draft of the new work item proposal. All the necessary elements of the proposal were completed and incorporated into the ISO Form 4 (with annexes). Rather than submit a draft, it was decided that the proposal should include as an annex just an outline of what the draft will include.

Richard Martin mentioned that he will attend a conference held by "DAMA" (Data Administration and Management Association) on metamodels in 2001-March. It was pointed out that the notion of constructs is similar to the notion that database experts have of metamodels. It was also mentioned that DAMA might be a good forum in the USA to promote the work going on with ENV 12204.

It was noted that the next WG 1 meeting will be in conjunction with the SC 5 plenary meeting in Beijing. The WG 1 meeting will start on Monday afternoon, 2001-May-14, and end on Wednesday afternoon, 2001-May-16. ACTION: Greg Winchester to post the meeting logistics information he had recently received on the SC 5 Web site.

Upon thanking hosts Jean-Jacques Michel and Christine Hermetet-Filez for the excellent arrangements provided by AFNOR, the meeting was adjourned by Jim Nell at 1550 on Thursday, 2001-January-18.
