Abstract:
-
We introduct a representation scheme for engineering design
synthesis that includes not only a way to represent an evolving
attifact but also the design process. The representation uses an
object-oriented approach in order to model a wide range of design
tasks, including non-routine and novel combinations of design objects
(or "building blocks" ) from the knowledge base. Methods that are
applied to design objects represent design operators, and for its
design process. The proposed representation is both generic and
flexible enough to model many different design processes including the
top-down functional decomposition, step-wise refinement,
product-oriented bottom-up model, and constraint propagation
approaches. We present this model within the framework of a conceptual
design support system that was developed as a part of a computer
collaborative engineering effort.
