Abstract:
-
The National Industrial Information Infrastructure Protocols (NIIIP) Consortium is a
collection of companies, government and academic institutions developing protocols and a
reference architecture to enable virtual enterprises. This paper, a glossary, is an
appendix of the NIIIP reference architecture. In this glossary the NIIIP consortium has
adopted, as far as possible, the commonly held meanings of terms critical to explicating
the NIIIP reference architecture. To eliminate possible ambiguity in the usage of
terminology, the NIIIP developers have written a glossary that may be, at times, specific
to the consortium's architectural perspective. To contrast and extend our glossary,
additional sections from a related research and development initiative, the Intelligent
Integration of Information (I3) program, is appended to the NIIIP specific terms.
The NIIIP consortium is using a spiral development approach, in which the reference
architecture and results are published in cycles of refinement. This glossary reflects only
the consortium's first two sex month cycles and therefore additional terms may be added in
the future.
