Abstract:
The National Industrial Information Infrastructure Protocols (NIIIP) rely heavily on existing, emerging, and defacto standards; however, the protocols also push the limits of some of these standards. In developing the protocols the NIIIP consortium will experiment with and propose extensions to existing standards, and appropriate, in order to enable virtual enterprises based on open systems. Where possible, NIIIP will attempt to integrate existent and emerging standards, as opposed to, developing new standards. The NIIIP consortium itself is not a standards development organization. Instead, the consortium will work through standards organizations (e.g. Object Management Group -- OMG, standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data -- STEP, Internet Society.) Eventually, the consortium will identify a suite of standards that are known to work well together to support the virtual enterprise. This chapter describes the standards NIIIP has adopted and discusses some of extensions and/or prototyping NIIIP engages in on a path to offering contributions to various standards bodies.
