Abstract:
SIPS (Semi-Intelligent Process Selector) was originally developed to use AI techniques for generative process selection. SIPS considers a metal part to be a collection of machinable features--and for each feature, it generates a sequence of machining process to use in creating that feature. It does this by reasoning about the intrinsic capabilities of each manufacturing operation. SIPS is being extended to do handle other process planning tasks. This paper gives an overview of SIPS, and describes recent extensions which enable SIPS not only to do process selection, but also to select cutting tools and calculate process parameters such as feed rates and cutting speeds.
