Overview & Vision

The various groups of the Manufacturing Systems Integration Division (MSID) contribute to the research and development of standards and technologies leading to the implementation of virtual manufacturing enterprises. MSID uses information technology to implement computer-aided integrated manufacturing systems. We develop and maintain competence in such infrastructural technologies as:

  • distributed virtual manufacturing (DVM)
  • flexible computer integrated manufacturing (FCIM)
  • enterprise frameworks
  • concurrent engineering
  • product/process information & database system modeling
  • manufacturing communications
  • manufacturing information dissemination mechanisms

Manufacturing applications include:

  • engineering design
  • process planning
  • production planning & control
  • enterprise integration

Specific functions include:

  • fostering development and implementation of advanced manufacturing systems and their integration
  • participating in manufacturing data interface standards development
  • assisting industry in implementing voluntary data standards relevant to DVM,including standards for digital product/process data sharing and electronic commerce
  • developing methodologies for the testing of DVM-related standards
  • providing a service for the validation and conformance testing of DVM-related standards and their vendor implementations
  • facilitating industry efforts to develop and implement new DVM applications by providing a testbed for demonstration of the standards and technologies
  • providing mechanisms for the exchange of information about DVM.
