The 4.448 MN (1,000,000 lbf) deadweight machine

Previous Home Next
The 4.448 MN deadweight machine

This force generator is the largest of the six NIST deadweight machines. It generates twenty equal forces in increments of 222 kN (50 klbf). These forces are applied one-at-a-time as the lifting frame is raised by the hydraulic jack. This machine is used by the Mass and Force group to disseminate the unit of force in the range of 222 kN to 4.448 MN, and to perform research on force sensor characteristics.
