Ultrasonic Transducer

Ultrasonic Transducer

An ultrasonic transducer (shiny metal cylinder) is situated above an ultrasonic reference block set (red cylinders), with a penny in foreground acting as a dimensional reference. Everything is immersed in water which acts to couple the ultrasonic wave pulses, emanating from the transducer, to the reference blocks. The transducer is connected to an electronic pulser, thereby providing short-duration ultrasonic pulses that propagate into the blocks which contain flat-bottom-hole reflector targets at the other end. The echo amplitude of the ultrasonic reflections is monitored as a function of block length (metal path distance through which the wave pulses travel).
